Scanner-based stocktaking: EXCON adds a VIN scanner to ex:stock

EXCON is making digital vehicle stocktaking even faster: the new VIN scanner adds another vehicle recording option to its already efficient ex:stock inventory solution. Dealers will be able to scan vehicle identification numbers directly at the vehicle using a smartphone during stocktaking. The feature complements ex:stock’s existing recording options and simplifies digital vehicle recording.

The new VIN scanner has successfully passed testing and will be available for the 2026/27 year-end stocktake. Selected pilot partners will start using the feature in November. An internal comparison test demonstrates its potential: in the test scenario, EXCON recorded three times as many vehicles in the same amount of time using the VIN scanner as it did with manual stocktaking.

With ex:stock, EXCON already digitises and accelerates vehicle stocktaking. Users record vehicle stock digitally with just a few entries, rather than typing in complete vehicle identification numbers. The platform documents stock across multiple locations and enables centralised analysis in real time.

The new VIN scanner expands the possibilities of scanner-based stocktaking for vehicle dealers. Users will be able to scan vehicle identification numbers directly at the vehicle using a smartphone, making vehicle recording faster and more flexible. The feature complements the existing recording options and offers additional benefits for different stocktaking scenarios.

The VIN scanner is based on EXCON’s proprietary AI model. Recognition takes place directly on the device and works without an internet connection. No data is transmitted to third parties for VIN recognition.

How much faster can the VIN scanner record vehicles? EXCON put it to the test: in an internal comparison, the team carried out vehicle stocktaking using the new VIN scanner and the traditional approach with a clipboard and manual data entry.

The result: in the test scenario, the team recorded three times as many vehicles in the same amount of time using the VIN scanner. This comparison did not include the follow-up work required after manual stocktaking.

For large vehicle stocks in particular, this advantage can significantly accelerate stocktaking. The time you save as a dealer will depend on your on-site workflows and the scale of your stocktake.

Pilot partners to start using the new EXCON VIN scanner in November

The VIN scanner has already successfully passed internal testing. In November 2026, selected pilot partners will use the additional recording feature under real stocktaking conditions. Their feedback will support ongoing improvements.

The new feature will then be available as standard to our vehicle dealership clients for the upcoming 2026/27 year-end stocktake. This will help dealers record their vehicle stock faster and organise stocktaking more efficiently.
